ASK Cubby- You Write The Questions, I Sleep On The Job

“RC Driver

Cubby,

What’s going on with RC Driver? Are they really going out of business? Is that what the Cub report was about this week? Inquiring minds want to know!

Harold S.”

Cubby- Yo MTV Raps Harry, thanks for writing in and be sure to send us your snail mail for one of our way-super-dope sticker packs.

About RC Driver… I am only going to repeat the rumors that are going around. The rumors say that the print version of Driver is going away, but that it may still exist in some sort of digital or on-line format. I don’t have any super inside scoop here, so I have absolutely zero clue if the rumors are true or not, but they have been floating around forever and only recently have they jumped up to another level.

There ya have it, and there ya are, go fast, and bash hard.

“Question: Best motors

I am a huge fan of your Bigsquidrc website and I go on it everyday to look at the reviews that you guys post. I currently am building a Traxxas Stampede 4×4 and would like your advice on which motor to use. I have been looking at both sensored and sensorless motors but I do not know which one to choose. Some websites say sensored motors are better because they do not cog and are much more smooth. I have also heard that they do not have the power and reliability that sensorless motors do. I don’t know what to think.

If you were building a traxxas stampede 4×4 and had an unlimited budget, which motors would you buy? Could you give me your top 5 motors for a stampede 4×4?

Thanks, Keaton”

Cubby- Yo Keat, what’s up? Thanks for writing in, don’t forget to send us your snail mail for a sticker pack.

So… you are looking to put a gnarly power system in your Traxxas Stampede 4×4. Props on the rig, the Pede 4×4 is a true bashing beast, but now it is time to take the power system to the next level.

Your Pede can present a serious load to a power system. It is 4wd with relatively big/heavy tires, plus, if you have it geared for speed, or simple go mud’n and pack it down with extra weight, I would shoot for a power system that can take the rigors of a full-gnarly-mode bash machine. A 1/8th scale system is simply a waste unless you are running high speed with belted tires, so I would personally recommend a Castle Mamba X 1415 system. We reviewed the Mamba X with a 1410 a few weeks ago and were super impressed. The 1415/2400kV version will have the raw torque and serious wattage that you are looking for. Plus, you can run it either sensored for sensorless, so you can pick which way you like it best (and you are gonna like running it sensored, trust me). You will want to run 3S LiPo on that particular system, and don’t forget, start with conservative gearing and work your way up with a temp gun. In your application, that system should run with reasonable temps, last forever, and give you the kind of ridiculous power you are looking for after dialing in the gearing.

Yes, you’ll love that system and you can thank me later (or just drop a bottle of Dom in the mail, but that’s completely up to you).
