Losing grip – Phoenix, on fire!

Yo everybody! The Phoenix is dead, long live the Phoenix! A car with the brand name Phoenix, does have to have a phoenix paint job, methinks, and this is my attempt to make name and body justice.

Back in black, with a phoenix on the bonnet and a phoenix’s feather on the side. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, not least considering that I tried things I haven’t even been close to on previous bodies. The matte varnish on the roof, fenders and window trims works really well too, emphasising different materials.

In many ways this was the worst paint job ever, since it was very hard to judge how it would come out in the end. Once I had laid down a layer of Tamiya matte varnish I worked mainly with Createx Transparent colors, slowly building up the designs in a backwards way using a combination of airbrush and brush, layer after layer. Lots of layers!

While I was at it I also painted a new interior, since it came with the body and I thought that red seats would suit this body better than brown ones. I won’t take you through the whole process since I’ve done that before. Main difference from previous interiors was that I started laying out the main shades and highlights in white, and then built from there using different shades of transparent red.

As you can see, matte varnish really helps the stickers blend in.

So, what do you think? Hot or not? Was it worth the effort? Drop me a line at martin at bigsquidrc.com or let me know over here. In my previous column you can get an idea of the process behind the paint job.
