Monster Truck Madness – Watch the light boys, we’re going racing!
Hey folks, it’s time to announce the 2023 Trigger King RC Monster Truck Racing Series schedule! It should be a fun summer of racing in the dirt over in Waterloo, IL at JB Graphics Raceway.
There are 3 classes this year – Outlaw Retro Clod Buster, Sport Modified, and Pro Modified.
Sport Mod and Pro Mod are modern style monster trucks and the vehicles are close in construction with the main difference that Sport Mod is limited to 17t brushed motors and has a battery limit, whereas Pro-Mod you can pretty much do what you want.
There is no regulation as to the type of solid axle monster truck it has to be in either of these classes, so you have motor on axle versus shafty, or Clod vs SMT10 vs LMT vs home brews.
This is year 9 of Trigger King and over the years the trucks seem to be fairly balanced in how they’ve competed. These days there is so much power available for the trucks, that all of them can easily overpower the track so it’s more driver preference.
The LMT has shaken up the judged freestyle though, as it’s become the defacto platform for that. The trucks are just rugged, bottom line. I don’t see that changing this year!
The biggest change for this year is in the Retro class- Outlaw Retro is now Outlaw Retro Clod and is limited to Tamiya Clod Busters that look like old school monster trucks from the late 80’s/early 90’s. Over the years, I’d say 95 percent of entries have been Clod based so we bit the bullet and made it Clod only so it’s easy to govern.
We are trying to figure out a scale leaf spring/shaft drive retro class and see who all is interested and what kind of rules to use to race them, but right now we are just talking about it. I do think it would be a lot of fun to race super scale retros eventually though!
I’ll be racing an Outlaw Retro Clod, two Sport Mods and two Pro Mods. A Clod, SMT10, LMT, and two customs. One of those customs is yet to be built so I need to get moving on it!
I’ll be sharing details on the build as I get to it.
I’d love to see some of you come out and race! Full rules are available on TriggerKingRC.com and if you have any questions please e-mail me at doug @ bigsquidrc.com
