The Backyard – ReRe-Mod
Greetings everyone and happy Friday! Welcome to The Backyard, my little slice of the Internet.
Off-road Retro Re-Releases are mega hot right now, as many of the hobbyists today have the disposable income to happily sling at the vehicles they either owned as a youngster, or wanted to own but didn’t quite have the money for. I’ve really enjoyed seeing all of the classics come back, though I’ve not joined the masses yet in buying one.
Pretty sure that’s gonna change though with the Team Associated RC10 4WD Kit, though.
Most folks are familiar with the vaunted gold tub RC10- it’s arguably the most famous r/c buggy of all time, and is DEFINITELY the most famous r/c racing vehicle.
So yeah, massive waves were made this week when Team Associated announced the 4WD version of the RC10. If you aren’t familiar with the classic version of the 4WD car, that’s because it didn’t exist! Well, at least not officially. There have been various homebrew and small batch aftermarket kits to turn the classic buggy into a 4WD, but nothing official. Heck, AE didn’t release a 1/10 4WD until the late 2000’s, when the B44 came out.
Side-note- I absolutely ADORED racing my OG B44. 1/10 4wd buggies are an absolute blast and I’d suggest if you’ve never raced one and are able, that you do!
So yes, having an official re-release of a car that never existed, but that could’ve, along with some modern updates to make it drivable, is amazing. It’s a ReRe-Mod, if you will.
Team Associated is also being very up front that they are working hard to make sure parts support is available, so this is to be a runner.
I don’t have any 1/10 tracks near me anymore, but I do have one of the best 1/8 scale facilities in the country located about 30 mins from my house, so having a 4×4 version of the classic RC10 that I can wheel on it is so much more appealing than the 2WD, which would mainly be a shelf queen.
It’s fun seeing how much hoopla that this RC10 release is causing. I’ve been reading some trash talk from the Kyosho Optima fans who are looking forward to putting a beating on the AE, and it’s a lot of fun.
If a true vintage 4×4 buggy scene got going near me, it would take me about 3 seconds to get involved. They all just look so damn cool.
And on the “look so damn cool” part….I had planned to start racing 1/8 scale this summer, but the modern stuff with the space age look is just something that I can’t get into, try as I might. These old buggies and trucks just look so much more appealing to me. But that discussion is best for another blog post.
Kudos to AE for this release! I can’t wait to see one in person!
That’s it for me this week folks. Until next time, keep it on all 4’s!
